Job Interview ‘Must Do’s’

Share To

In the competitive landscape of job hunting, securing an interview is a significant achievement. However, the real challenge lies in making a lasting impression once you’re face-to-face with a potential employer. Here are some crucial job interview ‘must-dos’ that can tip the scales in your favour.

1. Dress for Success

First impressions matter, and your attire plays a pivotal role. Dressing professionally and tidily reflects your respect for the opportunity. Research the dress code, and when in doubt, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

2. Be Prepared

Preparation is the key to success. Have a pen and paper to jot down important points or questions you have arising from the interview.  YOu can refer to this later in the interview when you have the opportunity to ask questions.  Also, have a well-organized folder containing:

  • a list of references,
  • work samples, and
  • any other relevant documents such as a photocopy of your driver’s license and abstract if the position includes driving.

This not only showcases your professionalism but also saves time during the interview.  Being prepared demonstrates your commitment.

3. Maintain Eye Contact

Effective communication goes beyond words. Maintain eye contact throughout the interview to convey confidence and engagement. It shows that you are attentive and interested in the conversation. Striking the right balance is crucial – not too intense to make the interviewer uncomfortable, but enough to express your sincerity.

4. Ask Thoughtful Questions

Prepare a list of insightful questions in advance. This demonstrates your genuine interest in the position and the company.  Check out https://www.sourcingpeople.ca/blog/questions-to-ask-a-recruiter   Avoid generic questions easily answered through basic research. Instead, inquire about the company culture, team dynamics, and the challenges and opportunities associated with the role. This not only showcases your enthusiasm but also helps you evaluate if the company aligns with your career goals.

5. Follow Up

The interview doesn’t end when you walk out the door. Send a thank-you email expressing your gratitude for the opportunity and reiterating your enthusiasm for the position. Use this as a chance to briefly reinforce why you are the ideal candidate. A timely follow-up not only leaves a positive impression but also keeps you fresh in the interviewer’s mind.
